Harrowing moments in Las Vegas shooting: 'People started dropping'

Country music star Jason Aldean was mid-song when a rapid-fire volley thundered through a crowd soaking up music on a relaxing Sunday night along the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

Aldean appeared to pause, and the crowd of 22,000 concertgoers at the outdoor Route 91 Harvest Music Festival hushed in a nervous moment of uncertainty. Then another round of pops and muzzle flashes.

And this time, no question. Gunfire.

Desperate concertgoers scrambled for an escape route as a gunman continued his onslaught from a high-rise perch above. People dived under parked cars or took cover behind concession stands. Screams sliced through the air.

Some, bloodied and wounded, fell to the ground. Others carrying the wounded took safety and formed makeshift triage areas as ambulances raced to the Strip.

The scene was like watching "a bad movie," singer Jake Owen told ABC News. "Standing there, you could hear the bullets starting to hit the roof of the stage, and people started fleeing everywhere," he said.

"It sounded like gunshots were coming from all around us, and this is before any of us knew that it was coming from above," said Owen, who had performed just before Aldean took the stage.

Authorities say the gunman fired from a hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino overlooking the concert. The area is lined with upscale hotels, casinos and restaurants and is normally packed with tourists.
